Rutin (vitamin P1)

What are vitamins?

Vitamins as you know are important for the proper functioning of the body. It also helps in maintaining the overall health of the body. Vitamins are also known to help maintain the proper functioning of the body organs and also the functioning of the metabolic activities of the body. The deficiency of these vitamins can lead to various body related ailments which includes the functioning of the main body organs, the functioning of the blood cells and the hormonal balance in the body.

Rutin is classified under the group of bioflavonoids. Bioflavonoids or bioavailable flavonoids and vitamin P all belong to the family of water soluble plant pigment kingdom. This vitamin has various qualities like it is an anti-oxidant, antiallergenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic and anti viral properties.

Rutin a bioflavonoid is related to hesperidin. It is also a glucoside of quercetin. Rutin also contain nearly 50% of quercetin. A flavonol glucoside it consists of flavonol backbone and glyconrutinose. A water soluble solid substance it appears yellowish in color and is more soluble in water than aglycone quercetin. Vitamin P1 or Rutin is a the main base for almost all groups of bioflavonoids.

Rutin a bioflavonoid along with Vitamin C is known to work in reducing the pain in the body an also in the intraocular pressures. Bioflavonoids as you know are the most important nutrients which have the strength and ability to modulate the capacity of the blood vessels which includes the blood capillaries. A phenolic anti-oxidant it has shown to help destroy the free radicals in the body which are known to cause several body ailments starting from respiratory tract diseases to cancers.

Rutin also helps in reducing the glutathione level in the body due to its anti-oxidant properties. It also offer support to the circulatory system of the body by supplying the required nutrients and also helps in maintaining the supply of these nutrients to the eyes too. Rutin is also helpful in stopping recurrent bleeding which is often caused due to the weak blood vessels. Helpful in treating chronic venous insufficiencies, hay fever, glaucoma, poor blood circulation, oral herpes, problems due to varicose veins, hemorrhoids, cirrhosis stress, cataracts and low serum calcium etc.

It has found its topical use in the form of creams and ointments which when applied helps stimulate the proper circulation of blood and helps reduce the fragility of the capillaries in the body.

What are the sources of Rutin?

Rutin is abundantly found in apricots, cherries, buckwheat, prunes, rose hips, in the rinds of whitish rinds of citrus fruits. It can also been found in the core of the fresh green corns of peppers.

Buckwheat is a very rich protein and contains nearly 12-15% of Rutin in it and has essential amino acids like lysine etc which are found deficient in almost all major crops and cereals, it also abundantly found in lipids, mineral sources of iron, copper and phosphorus. Vitamin B1 and Vitamin B2 also. Rutin is not available in some grains and pulses like rice, wheat etc and even in beans.
